Butler, John D. 'Jack'
John D. “Jack” Butler, 90, of Marion, died Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2010, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, Hiawatha, following a brief battle with cancer. Funeral Mass: 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 23, at St. Matthew Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids, by Father Mark Osterhaus, with military honors provided by American Legion Post 298 of Marion. The family will greet friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Marion, where a vigil service will begin at 6 p.m. Private family inurnment: Mount Calvary Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include his son, John (Dawn) Butler of Marion; his daughter, Wendy (Ron) Ransford of Marion; three grandchildren, Dan (Pam) Butler of Knoxville, Tenn., Eric (Chris) Butler of Marion and David Ransford of Marion; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Marjorie; his wife, Ruth; and 11 siblings.
Jack was born May 3, 1919, the son of William and Anne (Birmingham) Butler, in Williamsburg, Iowa. He enlisted into the U.S. Army during World War II, serving in the Galapagos Islands in the Pacific. After returning home from the war, Jack worked for Art's Radio Dock, Cedar Rapids, Marion TV, and Collins Radio. He owned and operated Butler Electronics for many years until he retired.
Jack enjoyed being outside working on projects and taking walks at Squaw Creek Park. He also enjoyed listening to various types of music. Jack was an avid bowler, enjoyed crossword puzzles, and tinkering with electronics and TVs.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Jack's memory.
