Butcher, Howard Lewis
Howard Lewis Butcher, 93, of Camden, N.J., and father of Howard Karl Butcher of Iowa City, died Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2012, at the Iowa City VA Health Care System. Burial will be at the Rock Island National Cemetery, Rock Island, Ill. Lensing Funeral Service in Iowa City is handling arrangements.
Howard was born Oct. 4, 1919, in Camden, N.J., the son of Howard Winfield and Olivine (Olson) Butcher. Howard served for 24 years in the U.S. Army and retired at the rank of Chief Warrant Officer 4. He was united in marriage to Elise Goetze Meyer on May 15, 1953, in Heidelberg, Germany. After living in Fayetteville, N.C., for over 30 years, Howard and his wife moved to Iowa City in August of this year to be near family.
Survivors include his wife, Elise; children, Inge Wilson of Alamocorodo, N.M., Renate Jenkins of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Howard K. Butcher of Iowa City and Anita Gatica of Sierra Vista, Ariz.; his grandchildren, Ben Jenkins of Charlotte, N.C., Michelle Neier of Fayetteville, N.C., Andrea Gatica Flores of Sierra Vista, Ariz., and Nyah Taylor-Butcher of Iowa City; and three great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Howard W. Butcher and Marie Josephine Olson; and two sisters, Dorothy Nittinger and Lillian Curran.
The family wishes to extend their deepest gratitude to all the staff at Heartfield's Assisted Living in Cary, N.C., Legacy Senior Living Community in Iowa City, and all the medical and nursing staff on 7W at the Iowa City VA Health Care System.
