Burton, William A. 'Bill'
William A. “Bill” Burton, 89, of 1007 23rd St. SE, Cedar Rapids, died Sunday, Nov. 8, 2009, in St. Luke's Hospital. Funeral services, with military honors, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. The Rev. David Hohmann of First Congregational Church will officiate. Burial in Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home.
Survivors include a daughter, Mary (Jerry) Schaefer of Marion; son, Richard (Jan) of Carmel, Ind.; son, Robert (Debbie) of New Freedom, Pa.; sister, Loretta (Harry) Lackey of Orlando, Fla.; brother, Burl Peppler of Baggs, Wyo.; seven grandsons; two great-grandsons; one great-granddaughter; and a very special friend, Gertrude Barkwill.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia (Crew); his parents; and one brother.
William was born Nov. 28, 1919, in Salida, Mo. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy during World War II from January 1942 through November 1945. He married Virginia Crew on Jan. 14, 1946, in Chicago. She died in 1998. He worked for Rockwell Collins in Cedar Rapids for over 30 years. He was a longtime member of First Congregation Church. He enjoyed fishing and hunting, and one of his favorite locations was the bank of a trout stream in the Colorado Mountains.
Military honors by VFW Post No. 788.
