Burrell, William E.
William E. Burrell, 75, of Cedar Rapids, formerly of Van Horne, died Thursday, Dec. 24, 2009, of a brain aneurysm at Hope Hospice in Fort Myers, Fla. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 30, at St. Andrew Lutheran Church in Van Horne with the Rev. David Lingard officiating. Committal services will be held at 1:30 p.m. at Cedar Crest Cemetery in Jesup. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Phillips Funeral Home In Keystone.
“Bill” was born May 13, 1934, in Waterloo, Iowa, the son of Clifford and Mabel (Larson) Burrell. His mother, Mabel, died when Bill was two years old. Clifford later married Mary Burrell, who raised Bill. The family lived in Jesup where Bill graduated from Jesup High School in 1952. He attended Iowa State University. Bill left college to serve his country in the United States Army. Following his discharge, Bill moved to Van Horne where he owned and operated K & B Produce and then Kaeberle Grain for many years. He was married and later divorced. Bill was very active in the Van Horne community, where he was a member of St. Andrew Lutheran Church, the Van Horne Businessmen's Club, the Iowa Feed and Grain Association, the Thomas F. Bevins American Legion Post 148, and Tara Hills Country Club. He was also a member of the Elks Lodge of Cedar Rapids and Olde Hickory Country Club of Fort Myers, Fla. He enjoyed life, especially traveling with his life companion of the last 13 years, Patty Snyder. He took pleasure in playing golf and watching Iowa Hawkeye and Iowa State Cyclone sporting events, and fishing. Bill enjoyed his retirement at Holiday Lake in Iowa, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and in Fort Myers, Fla.
Bill is survived by three children, Jeff (Mary) Burrell of Fort Collins, Colo., Rick (Andrea) Burrell of Austin, Texas, and Jodi (Jody) Check of Rolling Meadows, Ill. six grandchildren, Samantha and Jackson Burrell, Sydney and MacKinley Burrell, Amanda and Ethan Check; his brother, Robert (Carolyn) Burrell of River Hills, Wis.; several nieces, nephews and a cousin; his life companion, Patty Snyder of Cedar Rapids; her children, Jeannie Douglas of Naperville, Ill., and Julie Snyder Klinger (Phillip) of Cedar Rapids; and her grandchildren, Brian and Michael Douglas, Jared Snyder, Shantel Klinger, Matt (Jane) Klinger and Brad Klinger.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepmother, Mary; his infant sister, Arla; and Patty's son, Steven Snyder.
