Burnside, Vaughn Keith

Vaughn Keith Burnside, 70, of Cedar Rapids, died Monday, May 13, 2013, after a short illness from a rare form of cancer at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha. Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mark's United Methodist Church, by the Rev. Craig Peters and the Rev. Carroll Brown. Friends may visit with the family at the church Monday from 5 to 8 p.m. and Tuesday after 10 a.m.

Vaughn is survived by his wife, Sandy; two daughters, Melenie (Lee) Burnside of Yorkville, Ill., and Kathryn (Bob) McIlvanie of Cedar Rapids; his mother, Alene of Valparaiso, Ind.; five granddaughters, Madison, Michaela and Maggie of Yorkville, Ill., and Gabrielle and Lilliana of Cedar Rapids; a grandson, Quinn of Cedar Rapids; three sisters, Pat (Lee) Amstutz, Karen Burnside and Kim (Earl) McDowell, all of Indiana; a brother, Dave (Sheila) Burnside of Indiana; a sister-in-law, Bev (Dave) Schepp of North Dakota; a very special brother-in-law who he loved dearly, Les (Joanne) King of North Dakota; 11 nieces and nephews; 13 great-nieces and great-nephews; a great-great-niece; and close friends, Brian and Barb Worley and Dan and Gail Husmann, all of Cedar Rapids.

His father and niece, Heather McDowell, preceded him in death.

Vaughn was born Dec. 11, 1942, in Michigan City, Ind., the son of Warren and Alene (Warren) Burnside. He married Sandra King on Feb. 24, 1967, in Chesterton, Ind. He was a meat merchandiser for the Nash Finch Co., where he had worked for more than 20 years. He was a member of St. Mark's United Methodist Church and an Army veteran.

Vaughn was a gifted athlete and loved almost all sports. His great love was golfing with his golfing buddy, Brian. His greatest joy was his grandchildren, playing with them when they were little and laughing with them as they grew older.

A memorial fund has been established in Vaughn's memory.
