Burns, Velda Irene
Velda Irene Burns, 94, formerly of Cedar Rapids, died Monday morning, Aug. 13, 2012, at her daughter's home in Watkins. Services: 10 a.m. Saturday at Teahen Funeral Home by the Rev. Rick Gail. Burial: Palo Cemetery. Friends may visit the family from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday and after 9 a.m. Saturday.
Velda is survived by three sons, Charles (Mary), LaVern and Roland (Cindy), all of Cedar Rapids; four daughters, Soleta (Bernard) Darrow of Villa Park, Ill., Wanda (Jack) Moss of Round Lake, Ill., Lexy Lou (Bill) Hultman of Watkins, and Janel (Jack) Kramer of Marion; 24 grandchildren; great-grandchildren; great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Bettie Lloyd of Cedar Rapids.
Her husband, Robert; three grandchildren, Steve, Barton and Megan; one great-grandchild, Connor; and a daughter-in-law, Donna, preceded her in death.
Velda was born Oct. 15, 1917, in Toddville, the daughter of Harry and Carrie Hepker Pickerill. She married Robert B. Burns on April 8, 1937, in Marion. He died Jan. 13, 1999. She was a member of Bethany Congregational Church, the American Legion Auxiliary, the Ambrose Recreation Club and St. James United Methodist Church including the Silver Club and the Priscilla Club.
She loved to sew children toys, play cards and make quilts that she offered for sale at Usher Ferry.
