Burns, Robert William
Robert William Burns, 83, of Monticello, died following a courageous battle with cancer on Thursday, April 12, 2012, at Jones Regional Medical Center, Anamosa. Memorial Services: 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 19, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Marion, by the Rev. Byron Henn. The family will greet friends from 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 18, at the funeral home in Marion. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, Cedar Rapids, with military honors provided by Marion American Legion Post 298.
Survivors include his wife, Linda of Monticello; four daughters, Mollie (Lance) Quigley of Fairfax, Diane (Mike) Etzel of Marion, Lori (Arnie) Rushford of Tama, and Lisa (Devin) Benter of Mason City; and three grandchildren, Alec and Austin Rushford, and Jade Benter.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and brother, Leland Burns.
Robert was born Aug. 6, 1928, the son of Clifford and Viola (Tudeen) Burns. He graduated from Marion High School and was a veteran of the United States Army, having served during the Korean War. Robert married Mary Ellen Dumbolton in 1953. Mary Ellen died in 1972. He then married Linda Steiner Mapel on Feb. 18, 1990, at St. Paul's Methodist Church in Olin. Robert was a quiet boy who grew into a kind and gentle man.
