Burnita D. Young, 98, of Solon, died Thursday, March 6, 2014, at the Solon Care Center. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 10, at the Solon United Methodist Church. The Rev. Scott Kober will officiate. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, Cedar Rapids. Friends may call at the church from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday.
Burnita was born Dec. 24, 1915, in Edgewood, Iowa, to H. Roy and Ruth Alcorn. She attended the Cedar Rapids Business College and worked as a sec-retary and bookkeeper. She married Alfred G. Young on Oct. 13, 1939. Burnita's last place of employment was St. Luke's Hospital, where she worked for 17 years.
Upon retirement, she enjoyed traveling and gave much of her free time to volunteering and giving back to her community.
Some of the organizations that she was active in were Iowa State Commission for the Blind as a reader, Green Square Meals, R.S.V.P., Cedar Rapids and Solon Public Schools, St. Luke's Hospital and Kenwood Methodist and Solon United Methodist churches.
She will be remembered for her quick wit, sense of humor and her love of reading, quilting and creative writing of poems and "jingles." She lived a very full and active life.
Burnita is survived by her only son, Larry and wife Deannie Young of Solon; four grandchildren, Todd (Jenny) Young of Minot, N.D., Stacey Young-Hackert of Solon and Chad (Rebecca) and Benjamin Young, both of Iowa City; seven great-grandchildren, Tory, Quinn, Lincoln, Ivan, Avery, Miley and Wyatt; her sister, Elinor Bea Entrekin; and nieces, Jena Hamilton and Wendy Nemechek.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Alfred, in 1975; and her sister, Velma Schlomann.
