Burigo, Mario 'Matty'
Mario “Matty” Burigo, 89, died Wednesday, June 8, 2011, at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids, surrounded by his family.
Surviving are his spouse, Ann Dente Burigo; his children, Mark Burigo of New Rochelle, N.Y., Leslie Burigo Tiedemann and her husband, Tom Tiedemann, and Susan Burigo and her husband, Gary O'Brien, all of Cedar Rapids. He is also survived by his beloved grandchildren, Ross W. Tiedemann and his wife, Kendra Doty Tiedemann, of Nashville, Tenn., Chad Tiedemann and Evan Burigo O'Brien, both of Cedar Rapids, and Shane Burigo O'Brien of Des Moines. His great-grandsons, Paul and Norman Tiedemann of Nashville, Tenn., were his delight.
Matty was born in New Rochelle, N.Y., proudly served with the U.S. Army during World War II in Europe, and married Ann Burigo in 1947. Together they raised three children in suburban New York.
“Matty” was an accomplished golfer, avid sports fan and in later years, an avid TV golf fan. Notre Dame rfootball, the NY Giants, Mets and Rangers, he followed them all through many decades.
Matty and Ann moved to Cedar Rapids in 2002 to be with their daughters and grandchildren.
He is fondly remembered by his numerous friends and his loving family.
Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 11, in the Queen of All Saints Chapel at All Saints Catholic Church. The Rev. David O'Connor will officiate. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 tonight at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home, where a vigil service will take place at 7 p.m. Burial will take place at Rock Island National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Mercy Medical Center.
