Buckingham, John G.
John G Buckingham, 83, of Iowa City, died Tuesday, July 28, 2009, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics following a lengthy illness.
Visitation will be held Thursday, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Lensing's Oak Hill in Coralville. A wake service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Thursday. Mass of Christian burial will be held Friday, at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Iowa City with Reverend Jeff Belger officiating. Burial will be at 12:45 p.m. at Oak Hill Cemetery in Coralville with military graveside rites by the Coralville American Legion.
John was born August 3, 1925, in Independence, the son of Herbert and Caroline (Johnson) Buckingham. In 1943, John graduated from Burlington High School and joined the Navy with his father. He served in both World War II and the Korean War. On November 25, 1950, he married Wilma Sand at St. John's Catholic Church in Independence. John was a mail carrier in Iowa City for many years. Following his retirement, he worked for University of Iowa Hospital with Safety & Security. He was a long time member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Iowa City. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 721 in Coralville, Fraternal Order of the Eagles, VFW, and the Catholic Order of the Foresters. He was a volunteer with the Coralville Fire Dept. for 15 years.
Survivors include his wife Wilma of Coralville; son, Charles Buckingham (Kimberly) of Walford; daughters Patricia Buckingham and Carla Buckingham (Thomas O'Connor), and son James Buckingham, all of Coralville; grandchildren, Patrick and Sarah Buckingham, Erin and Casey O'Connor, Elizabeth and Anna Buckingham; and special friend Betty Calcote and her family, sons Mark and Scott Calcote, and daughters Robin Gonzalez and Judy Terry.
He is preceded in death by his parents, son Jack, and aunt Margaret Dunn.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to: Coralville Fire Dept., Solon First Responders/Fire Dept., Lantern Park Nursing & Rehabilitation Center (Wii Fund) and St. Mary's Church.
