Bryant, Donald D.
Donald D. Bryant, 93, of Cedar Rapids, died Tuesday, May 17, 2011, at his home. Services will be 2 p.m. Friday, May 20, at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids, located at 2121 Bowling St. SW, with the Rev. Dr T. Edwards Breed of St. Andrew Lutheran Church presiding. Full military rites will be conducted following the services. Visitation will be an hour before services Friday at the chapel. Private family inurnment will be held at a later date. Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids is handling arrangements.
Donald was born Nov. 16, 1917, in Marshalltown, the son of Leo and Gladys (Roundy) Bryant. He married Marcia J. Lura on Dec. 12, 1941, in San Antonio, Texas. He served in the United States Air Force during World War II. He was a proud member of the 14th Air Force Flying Tigers as well as the Marion American Legion. He retired as a Lt. Colonel pilot after 28 years. He also worked for the state of Texas Employment Commission for 10 years. During his military career he achieved the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal and the Air Force Commendation Medal.
He was an avid sports lover, including golf, the San Antonio Spurs and the Chicago Cubs.
Don is survived by his children, Diane (Carl) David and Donald Jr. (Linda) Bryant; grandchildren, David Bryant, Sean Bryant, Kevin (Jennifer) Bryant, Jerry (Regina) Meyer and James (Dawn) Meyer; five great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; a brother, William (Hope) Bryant; and his sister-in-law, Thelma Bryant.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Marcia; sister, Helen Bryant; brother, the Rev. Herbert Bryant; and granddaughter, Jeannette Meyer.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Alzheimers Association, St. Andrew's Lutheran Church or Cal Farley's Boys Ranch in his name.
