BRUCE LEROY ALGER Lisbon Bruce Leroy Alger, 81, passed away at his church on Sunday, Aug. 28, 2016. A Celebration of Life will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 12, with visitation from 9 to 11 a.m. at Lisbon United Methodist Church with military rites. It is requested that you honor Bruce with Cubs attire. Survivors include his wife, Geraldine Horsman Alger; daughters, Bobbi Kruse, Lisbon, and Betsy Jeffrey, Cedar Rapids; sons, Barry (Cindy) Alger, Cedar Rapids, and Brian (Lisa) Alger, Mechanicsville; 10 grandchildren, Brianna (Shane) Sizer, Kassidy (Ashley) Kruse, Monikka (Ryan) Fuller, Grant (Lacy) Alger, Alicia (Cory) Gatzemeyer, Andrew (Amanda) LeGrand Jeffrey, Jamie (Donnie) Murphy, Luke (Shonda) Jeffrey, Abby Alger Gomez and Kal (Lindsay Arbogast) Alger; and 23 great-grandchildren, with two more on the way. Bruce was born in Webb, Iowa, on Aug. 9, 1935, the second son of Elmo and Anna (Strohman) Alger. He attended grade school in Gillette Grove and at the age of 14 the family moved to Grand Meadow, Minn., where they farmed. He attended high school in Grand Meadow and played football and baseball. Bruce joined the U.S. Navy and served on the world cruise in the Korean War from 1952 to 1956 on the USS Stormes and made the Navy boxing team. He boxed Golden Gloves in Minnesota and Iowa. Bruce was faithful and dedicated to his friends, his country and his family of 51 plus. He farmed for 10 years and then owned and operated B&G Feed and Grain until 1983. He loved his sales work that took him all over Eastern Iowa. He won numerous company awards and enjoyed many trips through his feed sales. He worked at Iowa Illinois Gas Co., Joe & Cliffs, Sears, Wilson Meat Packing Plant, Menards and Midway Cleaning Service. He never met a stranger. He loved to visit with people and had a story for everyone. His health problems were many, but he never complained and was always thinking positive. He enjoyed the calls from family, and one of his greatest joys was family visits. On Sept. 15, 1956, he eloped with the love of his life, Geraldine Horsman. He was looking forward to celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion and in September 2013, he, along with a daughter, flew on an honor flight to Washington, D.C. That was amazing for him and he spoke of it many times. He never forgot old friends and he knew instantly how old so and so was. He had an amazing mind. Preceding him in death were his parents; four brothers, Richard, Larry, Leland and Lester; his mother- and father-in-law; and his son-in-law, Brian Kruse. Cards and memorials may be sent to 202 N.
