Browning Sr., Roy C. 'Brownie'
IOWA CITY - Roy C. “Brownie” Browning Sr., 88, of Iowa City, died peacefully Tuesday, Oct. 12, 2010, at Mercy Hospice. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 15, at St. Mark's United Methodist Church, where the family will greet friends after 1 p.m. The Rev. Dennis Coon will officiate. Family graveside committal will be at Memory Gardens. Arrangements are with Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Mark's Church or to Veterans Affairs.
Brownie was born April 21, 1922, in Bakersfield, Calif., the son of James and Laura Ivestor Browning. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. On Oct. 20, 1948, Brownie married Oleta Powell in Las Vegas. Oleta died Jan. 15, 2010.
Brownie worked in the oil fields of California before moving in December 1966 to Iowa City, where he was the plant operations supervisor at Mercy Hospital.
He was a member of St. Mark's Church and a past member of the Moose Lodge. Brownie loved to golf and was an avid Hawkeye fan.
He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
He is survived by two children, Roy C. (JoEllen) Browning Jr. of Iowa City and Mary Ann Setele of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.; six grandchildren, Matt, Elizabeth, Donna, Jeff, Brad and Tricia; and five great-grandchildren, Zachary, Lauren, Jeffrey, Jonathan and Peyton.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and siblings, Kenneth, Eire, Naoma and Norma.
