Brogan, Maynard Virgil
Maynard Virgil Brogan, 88, of North Liberty, died Sunday, Aug. 8, 2010, at Windmill Manor Care Center in Coralville. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 13, at Brosh Chapel in Solon, with burial to follow in Ridgewood Cemetery in North Liberty. Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Brosh Chapel in Solon.
Maynard was born Nov. 15, 1921, in rural Solon, to Thomas and Mae Ring Brogan. When he was 15 his parents divorced and he helped his mother farm. On Aug. 3, 1943, he married Betty Louise Maxey of Iowa City. They bought the family farm from his mother, where their three children were born. The government bought the farm for the Coralville Lake. They then bought a farm on Ivanhoe Road in Linn County. Twelve years later Maynard was tired of farming and wanted to do construction. They moved to Iowa City, then Coralville and North Liberty. He bought houses in need of repair and remodeled and rented them out. He also built several homes.
Maynard enjoyed golf, bowling, fishing and traveling. He remarked several times how glad he was they had traveled all 50 states, a tour in Europe and most of Canada while they were in good health.
He was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters. Hazel O'Brien, Mabel (Albert) Swart, Mearl (Ted) Crippen and Lola (Steve) Conner; two brothers, Pearl (Ann) Brogan and Oral Brogan; nephews, Jim and Ronald Conner and Jeff and Mike Brogan; and a niece, Doris Ann Dickerson.
Maynard is survived by his wife, Betty of 67 years; two sons, Jerry (Julie) Brogan and Dennis (Karen) Brogan, both of North Liberty; a daughter, Nancy (David) Williams of Flower Mound, Texas; seven grandchildren, Terry Brogan of Fort Dodge, Robin Vit of Webster City, Scott (Sarah) Brogan of Solon, Sean Brogan of North Liberty, Dustin Williams of Kansas City, Mo., Jason (Suzanne) Williams of Leawood, Kan., and Luke Williams of Flower Mound, Texas; four great-grandchildren, Samantha Vit, Brittany Williams, Sylvie Brogan and Colin Williams; sister, Evelyn Brogan of Bismarck, N.D.; a brother, Arthur Brogan of Marshfield, Wis.; and several nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, donations could be made to Iowa City Hospice and/or the North Liberty Fire Department.
