Brody, Albertine Ellen

Albertine Ellen Brody, 98, died peacefully Saturday, Aug. 1, 2009, after a brief stay at West Ridge Care Center in Cedar Rapids. She was born in 1911 and she celebrated her 98th birthday on May 20, 2009. A visitation will be held at Osterberg Funeral Home, 510 Fifth St., Jackson, Minn., on Thursday from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., with graveside services to follow at Riverside Cemetery in Jackson by Pastor David Brown. Teahen Funeral Home is making the family's arrangements in Cedar Rapids.

Albertine was born on the Hesh farm near Okabena, Minn., one of 11 children to Carl and Emma (Edhammer) Peterson. She is survived by her daughter Claire Smith, grandchildren, Matt (Lori) Smith and Michelle (Rick) Schrader, and great-grandchildren, Catie and Charlie Schrader, all of Cedar Rapids; son, Blair (Chris) Brody, Mason City; and grandchildren, Lisa Brody, Minneapolis, and Mike Brody, St. Paul. Also surviving "Tiny" are four sisters, Bibs (Arlene Leckband), Bumps (Mildred Morrison), Fuss (Dorothy Fenstermacher) and Peg (Margaret Clark).

She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Katharine; her husband, Chester; her son-in-law, Dr. Patrick J. Smith; one sister; and five brothers, one of whom she was especially proud who is buried at Normandy.

Albertine graduated from Mankato, Minn., State Teachers College in May 1930. She taught junior high school music until her marriage to Chester Brody on June 1, 1940, required her resignation. Chester and Albertine began their married life on a farm near Alpha, Minn. They moved to rural Spencer, Iowa, in 1948. Albertine was known for her homemade bread, pies, and bread pudding with homemade chocolate sauce. She was an active member of the Langdon Methodist Church, serving as a Sunday school teacher and superintendent and in various offices in the W.S.C.S. She and Chester actively supported Claire and Blair's numerous church, 4-H, school, music and athletic activities. They enjoyed traveling, camping, playing cards and square dancing.

Chester and Albertine retired to East Okoboji in 1974; after Chester's death in 1991, Albertine moved to Spencer and subsequently to Cedar Rapids to spend time enjoying her family and reading.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to their local hospice or to the charity of the donor's choice.
