Britt, Velma Lee A.
Velma Lee A. Britt, 80, of 2270 Farley Rd., Cascade, died 11:55 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 3, 2009, at Mercy Medical Center, Dubuque. Friends and relatives of Velma Lee may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Reiff Funeral Home in Cascade, where a CDA rosary will be at 4:30 p.m. and wake service at 6:30 p.m. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Martin's Catholic Church, with the Rev. Douglas Loecke officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
Velma Lee was born Sept. 27, 1928, in Cascade, Iowa, daughter of Leo and Emma (Lux) Coohey. She was a graduate of the former St. Martin's High School in Cascade and a graduate of the Dubuque College of Cosmetology. On Feb. 1, 1951, she was united in marriage to Donald Britt. Velma Lee operated a beauty shop on their farm near Buck Crick for a number of years. She was later employed as assistant director of the Jones County Care Facility in Amber.
She was a devoted wife and mother, and enjoyed farming with her husband and family. In her retirement she enjoyed winters with Don in Arizona. She was a member of St. Matthias Parish in Cascade and the Cascade Catholic Daughters of the Americas-Our Blessed Mother Court 1926.
She is survived by her husband, Donald Britt of Cascade; four children, Mike Britt of Bloomfield, Terry (Dianne) Britt of Lisbon, Bryan (Tricia) Britt of Monticello and Sheila (Jim) Fowler of Coal Valley, Ill.; 11 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one sister, Virginia (Joseph) Simon of Farley; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and one brother, Donald (Eleanor) Coohey.
A Velma Lee A. Britt memorial fund has been established.
