Breyfogle, John Leroy
John Leroy Breyfogle, 57, of Cedar Rapids, died Wednesday, May 11, 2011, at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio from complications during screening for a lung transplant. Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, May 21, at Teahen Funeral Home, by the Rev. Tim Smith. Friends may visit with the family after noon Saturday at the funeral home.
John was born March 29, 1954, in Decatur, Ill., the son of Paul and Wanetta (Wallace) Breyfogle. He had wonderful memories of an idyllic childhood with his brother, sisters and cousins, taking fun family vacations, and being in the scouts.
He graduated from MacArthur High School in 1972 and attended college at the University of Illinois in Champaign and Westminster College in Missouri. He often spoke of the good times he had there. To John, the important things in life were fun, family, and friends. He had a great sense of humor and was loved by many.
On Sept. 6, 1980, he married Vicki Brown Moore in Laramie, Wyo., and they had two children, Tara and Stephanie. While in Laramie, he was a TA and received his master's degree in computer science from the University of Wyoming. In 1985, John and his family moved to Center Point, Iowa. He spent 26 years with Rockwell-Collins, where he made many good friends. John and Vicki were married for 26 years before their divorce in 2006. Though divorced, they were still best friends, and loved each other always.
John had many hobbies, including hunting, golf, fishing, gardening, canning, playing cards, going to the casino, watching the “Cubbies,” taking drives in the country, spending time with friends, poker parties, and napping in his recliner.
He enjoyed cooking and his apple pies were the best. John was always cheerful, and loved a good laugh.
Since his diagnosis of pulmonary fibrosis in April 2010, John never complained as he fought a brave and courageous battle. We are so proud of his strength.
Those left behind to mourn his loss are his children, Tara (Dave) Smith and Stephanie Breyfogle (Travis); his former wife, Vicki; his pride and joy, granddaughter Sydnee; his mother, Nettie; his sister, Jan (Ray) Ramach; his brother, Bill (Debbie) Breyfogle; many nieces and nephews; and his loyal dog, Sophie (Stinky).
John was preceded in death by his father, Paul; his sister, Nancy; and his brother-in-law, Andy.
