Brewster, Sallie Frederick
Sallie Frederick Brewster, 85, died Thursday, June 13, 2013, after a short illness.
She was born Aug. 20, 1927, in Wichita Falls, Texas. She grew up during the Dust Bowl days and after finishing school worked in a record shop, learning to love Big Band music. She married Bob Brewster Jr. in 1947 and the couple moved to jobs around Texas and then to California, where Bob worked for Howard Hughes. Their only child is Gretchen Mellberg of Cedar Rapids. The family moved to New York City, where Sallie worked for TWA Airlines, and traveled in Europe frequently. They moved to Houston and then Omaha before residing in Marion.
She is survived by Gretchen; two granddaughters, Emily Lavender (Jamie) of Alameda, Calif., and Elizabeth Finch (Krys) of Savannah, Ga.; three grandsons, Dylan Finch, Simon Lavender and Ronen Lavender, and siblings, Mary Lange of Kentucky and Jerry Davis (Linda) and Terry Davis, both of Wichita Falls, Texas.
Sallie's family wants to extend their thanks to Dr. Brian Lindo, who was her physician for many years and who treated her with compassion and respect; to our amazing and stalwart team from St. Luke's Hospice: Erin, Pamela and Lolly - you were with us every step of the way with warmth, wisdom and humor (we could not have done this with out you!); to the caring staff of St. Luke's Hospice Unit, who pampered Sallie and showered her with affection and warm chocolate chip cookies during her stay; and to the dedicated staff of Mercy Hallmar, who cared for Sallie in her last days with compassion, dignity and gentleness. Every single one of you went above and beyond for both Sallie and her family. There are not enough words to tell you how thankful we are and we remember you all in our prayers of gratitude!
