Bonnie Mae Hayek, 90, of Traer, passed away Friday, June 1, 2018, at Sunrise Assisted Living Suites in Traer. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday, June 6, 2018, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul Catholic Church in Traer with Father Michael Hutchison as celebrant. Interment will follow at St. Wenceslaus Cemetery in rural Clutier. Visitation will be held Tuesday, June 5, 2018, from 4 to 7 p.m. at
St. Paul Catholic Church.
Bonnie was born on Aug. 12, 1927, in rural Van Horne, Iowa, the daughter of Bart and Blanche (Maher) Nolan. She graduated from Van Horne High School in 1944, then attended Paris Academy Beauty School in Cedar Rapids. Bonnie owned and operated Bonnie's Beauty Shop in Van Horne for many years, where she had many loyal customers she loved. She was then united in marriage to Frank Thomas Hayek on Feb. 20, 1960, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Van Horne, Iowa. They were lifelong residents of Clutier, and she moved to Traer at Sunrise Assisted Living in 2013. Bonnie was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church in Traer. She was an avid sports fan and knew her college basketball and football. Bonnie enjoyed the casino and her Irish heritage. Her grandchildren's activities were a big part of her life.
Survivors include her children, Tim Hayek of Hiawatha, Kathy Kahler of Traer and Jane (Jamie) Molony of Iowa City; five grandchildren, Brad (Ashley) Kahler of Newton, Brooke Kahler of Cedar Falls and Joey, Danny and Katie Molony of Iowa City; two sisters, Mary Rippel of Vinton and Pat Nolan of Cedar Rapids; sisters-in-law, Betty Nolan of Keystone and Dorothy Hayek of Iowa City; brother and sister-in-law, Bernard and Rose Hayek of Cedar Rapids; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, Frank, in 1990; and one brother, Jim Nolan.
A memorial fund has been established.
Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home, Tama-Toledo, is assisting the family with arrangements.
