Bonnie Lee Harger, 66, of North Liberty, passed away unexpectedly in her home on Friday, June 17, 2016.
Bonnie was born Feb. 8, 1950, in Cedar Rapids, the daughter of Joseph Don Harger and Mildred Irene (Robinson) Harger. Bonnie grew up in Toddville and attended Alburnett High School and later Kirkwood Community College.
Bonnie married Donald P. Mathes in 1967 and together they moved to Cedar Rapids to raise their family. She worked for many years as an engineer at Rockwell Collins, later as a receptionist at Breese Plumbing and HACAP of Iowa City.
Bonnie loved to engage in conversation, make people laugh and talk about her children and grandchildren. She was a passionate reader and cook who loved to feed people. Her sweet smile, infectious laugh, kind and caring ways will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
Bonnie is survived by her children, Gina Mathes of Iowa City, Donna Mathes of Seattle, Wash., Kerrie Mathes and her husband, Creston Lea, of Burlington, Vt., Kurt Mathes of North Liberty and Elizabeth Cavalier of Cedar Rapids; sisters, Carole Peterson of Soldier's Grove. Wis., and Mary Ellen Simpson of Marrero, La.; two grandchildren; amd many nieces, nephews and friends.
Bonnie was preceded in death by her parents; siblings, Dorathy Harger, David Harger, Don Harger, Arnold Harger and Richard Harger; infant sister, Marilyn; and former husband and friend, Donald Mathes.
Visitation will be held from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Thursday, June 23, at Lensing Funeral Service in Iowa City. Funeral services will begin at 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home with Pastor Brad Sherman officiating. Burial, following the luncheon, will be in the Anderson Cemetery in Swisher.
