He came to the United States in 1921 with his mother, Alice Schuck, and his brother, Otto, passing through Ellis Island before settling in Sheldon, Iowa, and taking the name of his stepfather, Joe Boll. His stepfather worked in a harness and shoe store and Joe began a career in the shoe business which was to last 60 years.
Joe graduated from Sheldon High School and on Sept. 8, 1937, he married Edith Wolf in Sheldon. They remained together for over 57 years until her death in 1995. He remained in the shoe business there, with the exception of service in the U.S. Army from 1943-45. In later years, he was employed as a factory representative for Genesco Shoe Corp. He resided in Sioux City, Glenwood, Minn., Alamo, Texas and again in Sheldon, before coming to Iowa City in 2001. Joe was an avid bridge player and enjoyed sports, particularly Hawkeye sports.
He is survived by his daughter, Janet Boll Wicks and husband Al of Iowa City; son, Larry and wife Diane of Carmichael, Calif.; grandchildren, David Boll and family of Greeley, Colo., Cindy Beckey and family of Torrington, Wyo., Susan Hamilton and family of Honokaa, Hawaii, Mark Wicks and family of Charles City, Iowa, Craig Wicks of Cedar Rapids and Brian Wicks and family of Iowa City; and six great-grandchildren.
