Gordon Allen Boerner was born March 14, 1950, in Sioux City, Iowa, the son of Glenn H. and Mabel T. (Johnson) Boerner. Growing up in Odebolt he attended Odebolt-Arthur Schools, graduating in 1968. He then attended and graduated from the University of Iowa in the College of Journalism in 1972. It was here that Gordie fell in love with the Iowa Hawkeyes, but more importantly he fell in love with his wife to be, Linda Bogue. He and Linda were married June 1, 1974, at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Holstein. After college, Gordie worked in the journalism field for the Iowa City Press-Citizen and KSIB Radio in Creston. After he and Linda were married they made their home in Ida Grove, where they raised their family. Gordie's career involved Hi-Way Products and First State Bank, both in Ida Grove, and the Swanson Insurance Agency in Odebolt. He retired and in 2011, he and Linda moved to Coralville to be nearer to their children and grandchildren, but also to be back with his beloved Hawks!
Gordie was an active member of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, where he served on the church council, past board president and served numerous terms on the Horn Memorial Hospital board in Ida Grove. He was a member or past member of Rotary, Kiwanis, Pheasants Forever, University of Iowa Alumni Association, the “I” Club, and since living in Coralville, a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Iowa City.
He was a people person. If you didn't know Gordie, that would change soon! He enjoyed golf, working outside in the yard, pheasant hunting, but most dear to him was his family. Gordie enjoyed his travels in life, whether it was with just Linda, or with Linda and the kids on their “Griswold” family vacations. He was there for his children growing up, and later when they had children of their own, he loved being grandpa!
His family includes Linda; their two children and spouses, Melissa and Joe Adrian of Richland, Iowa and Brett and Missy Boerner of Urbandale; grandchildren, Kaleigh and Kieran Adrian and Brandon and Tyler Pedersen; Gordie's brother and his wife, Ron and Christy Boerner of Wamego, Kan.; his sister-in-law and her husband, Suzie and Mark Libbey of Minnetonka, Minn.; and his brother-in-law and his wife, Mark and Jacki Bogue of Ida Grove.
Gordie was preceded in death by his parents, and an infant sister, Glennis Boerner.
Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service of Iowa City is caring for Gordie's family and his services.
