Bobbie Joe Lake Sr., 85, of Iowa City, died peacefully Saturday, Oct. 18, 2014, surrounded by his family at Mercy Hospice, of complications related to Parkinson's disease. Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 23, at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, Iowa City, with the Rev. Brent Hartwig officiating. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service, Iowa City. Burial, with military honors, will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Iowa City Hospice or Mercy Hospital Foundation for Mercy Hospice.
Bobbie was born Aug. 29, 1929, in Kansas City, Mo., the son of Ople and Maurietta (Stone) Lake. Bobbie was united in marriage to Carol Jean Meyer on Dec. 5, 1953, in Iowa City. He served in the U.S. Navy Reserves for 12 years.
Bobbie was employed at Hilltop DX, Browns Cleaners and Sanitary Farm Dairy. For 33 years, he was employed by the United States Postal Service, retiring in 1988. Following retirement, Bobbie was a bus driver for the Iowa City School District.
Bobbie was an avid St. Louis Cardinal fan all his life. He was a charter member of the Our Redeemer Lutheran Church where he had served his church in numerous capacities. Bobbie enjoyed golf and hunting with his father, Grandpa Bud, the boys and his brother. He enjoyed going to Missouri whenever possible. His greatest joy in life was his five children, 18 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. He loved all of them very much.
Bobbie is survived by his loving wife, Carol; and their five children, Pamela (Al) Baethke of St. Louis, Mo., William (Sherry) Lake of Iowa City, Patricia (David) Kaefring of Oxford, Brian Lake of Iowa City and Bradley (Kathy) Lake of Fitchburg, Wis.; 18 grandchildren, Nathan Baethke, Lindsay (Mark) Kottmann, Jason (Kylie) Baethke, Brandon (Jayme) Baethke, Kelly (Chris) Carlson, Kristene Lake, Michelle (Jason) Greve, Bobbie J. Lake Jr., James (Jordan) Ellyson, Justin (Carrie) Ellyson, Crystal Ellyson, Andrew Lake, Daniel Lake, Kevin Lake, David Lake, Brita Lake, Brady Lake and Cooper Lake; 13 great-grandchildren, Ava Baethke, Hudson and Wyatt Kottmann, Mila and Ryker Baethke, Brantley Baethke, Dylan, Max and Jacob Carlson, James, Jarrett and Jackson Ellyson and Tyler Ellyson; a brother, Don (Nancy) Lake of Richmond, Mo.; two nieces, Kim and Tracy Lake of Richmond, Mo.; one aunt, Betty Smith; and one cousin, Glenn (LeAnne) Norvell of San Diego, Calif.
Bobbie was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents and stepparents.
