Bob R. Rice, 67, of Shellsburg, died Thursday, May 31, 2018, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City following a sudden illness. A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, June 9, 2018, at the Ray and Virginia Boyer American Legion Post 166 in Shellsburg with Pastor Gary Gustafson officiating. Military rites will be conducted by the Ray and Virginia Boyer American Legion Post 166 and Iowa Military Funeral Honors. Private family committal services will be held at Evergreen Cemetery in Vinton at a later date. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, June 8, 2018, at Phillips Funeral Home Chapel, 212 E. Sixth St. in Vinton. A memorial fund has been established. Condolences may be left at www.phillipsfuneralhomes.com.
Robert Roy Rice was born Feb. 13, 1951, in Vinton to Delbert and Christine (Climer) Rice. He graduated from Shellsburg High School and attended Kirkwood Community College for trucking school and small-engine repair. Bob served his country in the United States Army in Germany and was honorably discharged. Bob drove a semi-truck for 22 years with Gordon Sevig Trucking Co. He enjoyed spending time with his family, being outdoors and fishing.
Bob is survived by his wife, Retta of Vinton; his daughter, Rilda (Tim) Gustafson of Keystone; grandson, Brett (Keya) Thomsen of Garwin; great-granddaughter, Sydney Thomsen; his stepgrandchildren, Ava and MacKenna Gustafson of Des Moines; and his brother, Larry Rice of Garrison.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Ted Rice and Nicky Climer; sister, Lois Jean; great-nephew, Jason Rice; great-great-niece, Cecelia Rice; and his sister-in-law, Janet Rice.
Phillips Funeral Home, Vinton, is in charge of arrangements.
