Bishara, Samir E.
IOWA CITY - Samir E. Bishara, 74, of Iowa City, died Friday, Oct. 8, 2010, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.
Samir was born Oct. 31, 1935, in Cairo, Egypt, the son of Edward and Georgette Bishara. He received his B.D.S. degree from Alexandria University and received his D.D.S. and M.S. degree in orthodontics from the University of Iowa College of Dentistry. Samir was professor of Orthodontics in the College of Dentistry since 1976 and had earned an international reputation for his excellence in his specialty.
Some of his most proud accomplishments include the Guggenheim Fellowship, serving as president of the College of Diplomats American Board of Orthodontics and most recently he received the Michael J. Brody Award for Faculty Excellence in Service to the University and State of Iowa.
Samir was better known to his colleagues and students as “Dr. B.”
Samir was a loving and devoted husband, father and brother. He will be dearly missed.
Survivors include his mother, Georgette Bishara of Charlottesville, Va.; wife, Anne; three daughters, Dina Bishara (William Hacker) of Conway, Ark., Dorine (Colton) Edmiston of Vancouver, Wash., and Cherine Bishara (Ian Shanklin) of Omaha, Neb.; stepdaughter, Christine (Todd) Timney of Columbus, Ohio; three grandchildren, Benjamin, Eilah and Josephine; his sister, Vivian (Arthur) McCormack of Charlottesville, Va.; nephew, Essam Abadir of Lancaster, Pa.; the Fahmy and Chehete families in Egypt and the Bishara cousins in Indianapolis and Houston.
Samir was preceded in death by his father.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 11, at St. George's Antiochian Orthodox Church, 3650 Cottage Grove Ave., Cedar Rapids, with the Rev. Fred Shaheen officiating. Graveside services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Monday at Oakland Cemetery, Iowa City. Visitation will be today from 3 to 6 p.m. at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service, Iowa City, where a Trisagion prayer service will be held at 6 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. George Church or to the UI Foundation for the College of Dentistry.
