Bill "Herk" Herkelman, 77, of Cedar Rapids, died Friday, July 24, 2015, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. Funeral services: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 28, at Faith Lutheran Church, 155 Boyson Rd., Marion, IA 52302. A visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, July 27, at Faith Lutheran Church. Burial: 2:45 p.m. Tuesday, July 28, at Pine Hill Cemetery.
Survivors include his wife, Kristine Herkelman of Cedar Rapids; two sons, Stan (Dawn) Herkelman of Cedar Rapids and Dan (Becky) Herkelman of Peoria, Ill.; four grandchildren, Andrew, Nathan, Erin and Sammy Herkelman; father, La Verne "Buster" Herkelman of Maquoketa; two brothers, Terre (Judy) Herkelman of Las Vegas, Nev., and Earl "Dude" (Jo) Galloway of Lost Nation; and brothers- and sisters-in-law, Al and Ruth Albers and Donna Herkelman.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Eva; and his wife of 42 years, Adena.
Bill was born March 30, 1938, the son of La Verne and Eva (Hamilton) Herkelman. He graduated from Elwood High School and played college basketball at Iowa State Teachers College (UNI). On Aug. 21, 1960, he was married to Adena Schmidt. She passed away in 2003.
Bill was a math teacher and coached baseball, basketball and football throughout his 52-year career, spending the past 45 years at Kennedy High School. He often spent his time tutoring math for many students. On Dec. 17, 2011, he married Kristine Parkhurst.
Bill was a big sports fan. His two passions in life were his grandchildren and sports. His favorite teams were the Iowa Hawkeyes, Chicago Bears and the St. Louis Cardinals.
Bill was a charter member of Faith Lutheran Church for the past 36 years where he also served as an usher.
In lieu of flowers, memorials will be directed to charities meaningful to Bill.
