Beverly Koshatka, 89, of 2508 Potomac Dr., Iowa City, Iowa, died in her home on Jan. 2, 2018.
A gathering of family and friends to celebrate Bev's life will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Monday, Jan. 8, at Lensing Funeral Home, 605 Kirkwood Ave., Iowa City, with a time of remembrance to follow at 3 p.m. Private family interment will be at Holy Trinity Cemetery in Protivin, Iowa. Memorial contributions may be directed to Community of Christ Church, 2121 S. Ridge Dr., Coralville, IA 52241.
Beverly was born on Jan. 9, 1928, in Crook County, Wyoming, "in the shadow of the Devils Tower," the daughter of Lyman T. "Tuck" Johnston and Vivian McElroy Johnston. She spent her early years in Wyoming, moving to rural southern Iowa when she was 10. She graduated from Blockton High School in 1946, attended Graceland College, Drake University and the University of Iowa, earning a B.A. in 1965 and a Master's of Library Science degree in 1969. After graduation, she was the librarian at Central Junior High School in Iowa City and transferred to City High School when Central closed. She retired after 22 years.
Beverly married LuVerne "Luke" Koshatka at All Saints Catholic Church in Des Moines, Iowa, on Nov. 9, 1951. They had two children, Cynthia Lynn and Shirley Vaughn. After retirement, Bev and Luke traveled and enjoyed their time together. Beverly was active in the University Club, the librarian alumni group and Community of Christ Church. She enjoyed aquacizing, walking, gardening and activities with friends and neighbors. She lived in the same neighborhood for 51 years.
Beverly is survived by her daughters, Cynthia (Michael Porter) of Fairfax Station, Va., and Shirley (Richard Gilmore) of Fairmont, Minn.; two grandchildren, Adrian Porter (Audrey Porter) of Arlington, Va., and Larissa Koshatka of Washington, D.C.; and one sister, Phoebe Rasmussen of Williamsburg, Va.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; her sisters, Barbara Swanson and Mary Stroburg; and her brother, Lyman Johnston.
