Betty A. Vondracek, 85, of Fairfax, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 24, 2023. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, October 30, 2023, at Brosh Chapel and The Avacentre in Cedar Rapids, located at 2121 Bowling Street SW. Celebration of Life service will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 31, 2023, at Brosh Chapel. The burial will be in Castek Cemetery next to the family farm.
Betty was born on February 18, 1938, the daughter of Harold and Frances (Kerkman) Brecht of Fairfax. In her childhood she spent extended periods of time with her Kerkman grandparents in Van Horne, where she created many fond memories, especially with her grandmother. Betty graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1956 and she enjoyed maintaining friendships with numerous classmates throughout her life. On July 28, 1959, Betty married Larry Vondracek in Cedar Rapids. They farmed and lived in rural Fairfax, west of Swisher, for 64 years. Betty took great pride and pleasure in meticulously maintaining their home and farmstead. Off the farm, she worked multiple jobs, volunteered at Eden United Church of Christ and with Johnson County 4-H, and enjoyed attending many events at College Community Schools. She was a supportive farmer’s wife, mother, and grandmother. She valued her time spent with her family and cherished many memories that were made together on and off the farm.
Betty is survived by her husband Larry of 64 years; her children Kevin (Joan) Vondracek, Keely (Dan) Nemec, and Kyle Vondracek; three grandchildren Collin Vondracek, Courtney Vondracek and Megan Nemec; brother Raymond (Nancy) Brecht; sister-in-law Marilyn (Bob) Simon; stepbrother Mike (Judy) Brecht.
Betty is preceded in death by her parents and sister-in-law Bonnie Brecht.
The family extends their gratitude to the staff of the Gardens Care Center for their compassionate care of Betty.
