Betty Louise Tucker, 88, of Iowa City, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2014. A gathering for family and friends to celebrate Betty Lou's life will be held from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 11, at Lensing Funeral Home, 605 Kirkwood Ave., in Iowa City. A private burial will take place.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Iowa City Public Library, Iowa City Community School District Foundation or Project Green.
Betty Lou was born April 9, 1926, in Davenport, Iowa, the daughter of Edward and Bertha (Glockhoff) Schmidt. She grew up in Davenport and was a 1944 graduate of Davenport High School. She married William Tucker on Nov. 8, 1947, in Des Moines. Betty Lou later earned a B.A. in journalism from the University of Iowa in 1956 and a M.A. in teaching in 1968. She taught journalism at Iowa City West High School from 1968 to 1971 and English literature at Northwest Junior High from 1971 until her retirement in 1973.
Betty Lou was a longtime member of Quill and Scroll, Phi Beta Kappa honor society, Pi Beta Phi sorority, PEO Sisterhood and various journalism and education societies.
Betty Lou was an avid reader, particularly of the classics, and she loved to journal about her travels and other special interests. Gardening was another passion, as well as entertaining family and friends, and get-togethers with her "potluck" group.
She was a loving and wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. To all who knew her, she was a delightful, thoughtful and giving woman.
Survivors include her son, Richard (Buffie) Tucker of Iowa City; daughter-in-law, Kay Tucker of Dade City, Fla.; six grandchildren, Meridith (Scott) Burba, James (Shannon) Tucker, Jessica (Shaun) Glick, Ashley Tucker, Matt Tucker and Sara Tucker; four great-grandchidren, Elisa, Eva, Cameron and Ethan; and her sister-in-law, Marlys Goettsch Schmidt of Davenport.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of almost 56 years; her son, Michael; and her brother, Edward Schmidt Jr.
The family of Betty Lou would like to thank the staff of Melrose Meadows Retirement Community and Dr. Margo Schilling for their excellent care and support.
Online condolences may be left for the family at www.lensingfuneral.com.
