Betty Svoboda, 83, of Alburnett, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, March 21, 2023, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, March 27, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Marion, Iowa. Funeral service will begin at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 28, at the funeral home with burial to follow at Lafayette Cemetery in rural Alburnett, Iowa.
Betty was born on June 21, 1939, in Bertram, Iowa, the daughter of Gerald and E. Ruth (Hayes) Butterfield. On Nov. 24, 1958, Betty was united in marriage to Thomas J. Svoboda. Betty had a passion for bowling and coaching bowling with Tom. She and her husband were the caretakers of Lafayette and Alice Cemetery, which she continued after his death. She enjoyed gambling, their cabin in Guttenberg, where they spent many weekends for 52 years. Betty was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary for the Alburnett Fire Department. She enjoyed ceramics, reupholstering and gardening. She was known for her “Rat Tail” that she had for many years.
Betty is survived and lovingly remembered by her son, Rex (Joann) Svoboda; her daughter, Sonja (Jerry Humpfer) Pfab; grandchildren, Travis (Danielle) Wiegand and Abigail Pfab; great-granddaughter, Hadley Wiegand; siblings, Virginia Carkuff and Butch (Barb) Butterfield; brother-in-law, Dave (Delores) Svoboda; sisters-in-law, Diane Svoboda, Shelly Svoboda and Theresa (Wayne) Alberts; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Gerald and Ruth; husband, Tom; brother, Keith Butterfield; and brothers-in-law, John Svoboda and Steve Svoboda.
