Betty J. Marx, 92, of Iowa City, passed away Thursday, Sept. 6, 2018, at Briarwood Health Care Center in Iowa City. Visitation will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 14, with a service to follow at 11 a.m. at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service, Iowa City. Burial will be at St. Agnes Cemetery in Ashland, Wis. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Iowa City Hospice, Mercy Life Line Scholarship or a memorial of donor's choice.
Betty was born Jan. 18, 1926, in Ashland, Wis., to Eleanor and Stanley Talaska. She graduated from Ashland High School in 1943 and married Orrin "Red" Marx on June 11, 1949, in Ashland. The couple moved to Glidden, Wis., before residing in Iowa City in 1952, where Red taught school at the University of Iowa Children's Hospital.
During World War II, Betty worked for the office of war information in Washington, D.C., and then Cotie Industries in Ashland. Betty then worked in the dean's office at the University of Iowa College of Education for over 35 years, retiring in 1988. She volunteered at the Mercy Hospital gift shop and Lifeline office.
She loved to travel and made many foreign trips with her husband and friends. Betty was an avid Hawkeye and Chicago Cubs fan. She was a member of the Johnson County I-Club, University Club, Mercy Guild and St. Mary's Church.
Survivors include nieces, Mary Jill (David) Lundeen, Colleen (Paul) Hultman and Katie (Bruce) Mars; nephew, Kevin (Kristen), their children and grandchildren; and cousin, Marlene Carlson.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Orrin, in 1981; and sister-in-law, Carol Marx.
