Betty Marie Veenker, 89, longtime resident of Iowa City, died Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2019, at the Wilton Retirement Residence in Wilton, Iowa.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 18, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service with burial at the McArtor Cemetery southwest of Iowa City. There will be a time of visitation one hour prior to the services and during the reception following the services and prior to the burial.

Betty Marie Burkett was born June 24, 1929, in Albia, Iowa, the daughter of Emery and Dorothy (Barrett) Burkett. As a young adult, she came to Iowa City, and this is where she raised her family and for many years worked as a dietary clerk at Mercy Hospital. In later years, she moved to live in Wilton, where her children reside. Betty enjoyed many things in life. She loved to read, sew, share her Democratic view on politics, visit the casino, talk history, and was known to enjoy a cookie or two along the way! Since living in Wilton, she has been a member of the Wilton United Methodist Church.
Her family includes her children, Sally and her husband, Bruce Walker and Will Hinkle, all of Wilton; four grandchildren, Bill Hinkle, Clell Hinkle, Sarah Walker and Sheryl Denny; six great-grandchildren; sister, Lucille Hamby; and brother, William Burkett.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two sons, George and Mike Hinkle; and six siblings.
