Betty Jean Hass, 93, of Cedar Rapids, passed away on June 3, 2024, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House. Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, June 10, 2024, at Brosh Chapel and The Avacentre in Cedar Rapids, located at 2121 Bowling Street SW. Celebration of Life service will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 11, 2024, at Brosh Chapel. Burial will follow in Czech National Cemetery.
Betty was born on March 7, 1931, in Cedar Rapids, the daughter of Frank and Johanna (Hilmer) Teply. She graduated from Wilson High School in Cedar Rapids, Class of 1949. Betty was united in marriage to Donald C Hass on October 7, 1950, in Cedar Rapids. Betty and Don lived in Walford with their family from 1953 until 1975. She worked at Prairie Elementary School as a secretary for 27 years, retiring in 1993, then after that retirement she worked at center court at Westdale Mall for many years. She enjoyed going to lunches with the Prairie retirees, occasional trips to the casino with friends, attending numerous grandchildren’s sporting, musical & theatrical events, and most of all spending time with her family. Betty was proud of her Czech heritage and served as a longtime volunteer at the National Czech and Slovak Museum and Library.
The family would like to extend a thank-you to the staff at The Gardens, Dennis & Donna Oldorf Hospice House for the care and kindness extended to our Mom while she was in their care. A very SPECIAL thank-you to Nikki Sporrer for her exemplary care & kindness given to our Mom while she was in her care, especially this last week of her life.
Betty is survived by her children Bobbi Oakley, Don (Becky) Hass, and Linda (Kevin) Fleming; eight grandchildren Brad Oakley, Chrissy (Bob) Angerer, Emily Hass, Sarah (Tim) Nissen, Ryan (Katie) Hass, Katie (Josh) Hopkins, Rayna (Josh) Lingenfelter, Bob Fleming (Ciara); her great-grandchildren Jay, Weston, Charlotte, Reagan, Leo, Everly, and Gibson; her brothers Don (Judy) Teply and Richard “Dick” Teply; as well as her nieces and nephews.
Betty is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her siblings Bob Sommers and Glenn Teply, her sister-in-law Carol Teply.
Memorials may be directed to Hospice of Mercy or to Prairie Bible Church in her name.
