Betty Jean Fairchild, 88, of Marion, Iowa, and a former resident of Davis County, Iowa, passed away Dec. 7, 2021, at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She was born Aug. 20, 1933, in Davis County, to Dale and Nadine Bell Blackwell. She married Gerald Fairchild on Nov. 10, 1951, in Davis County. Gerald passed away on Feb. 27, 2011.
Betty was employed at Collins Radio in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, for over 30 years. She worked as an assembly operator and was proud to be on the team that built the communication equipment for the Apollo moon landing program. Her hobbies and interests included listening to music, especially country western, square dancing, cooking, arranging flowers, attending the Davis County Fair and working with the ladies' auxiliary, bowling and playing solitaire. Most importantly, Betty was a wonderful mother and grandmother.
She is survived by her daughter, Theresa (Keith) Kintopf of Marion, Iowa; son, Gerry (Brenda) Fairchild also of Marion; four grandchildren, Jennifer, Jeremy, Jared and Lilly; and a brother, Rex Blackwell of Bloomfield.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; great-grandson, Zachary; sister, Connie Steinkruger; and a brother, Jimmy Dale Blackwell.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 17, at Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield with the Rev. Leslie Dotson officiating. Burial will be at a later date at the IOOF Cemetery in Bloomfield. Visitation will begin at noon Friday with the family present to greet friends from 1 p.m. until the time of the service. In lieu of money or flowers, the family ask that a memorial donation be made to St Luke's Foundation, P.O. Box 3026, Cedar Rapids, IA 52406-9927.
