Betty Miller Delaney, 96, of Cedar Rapids, died Friday, Dec. 23, 2016, in the Hiawatha Care Center, Hiawatha. Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 27, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service. Funeral services: 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 28, at the funeral home with visitation one hour before. Burial: Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include two brothers, Jack and Richard Abshire.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Leslie and Goldie Abshire; her brothers, William and Jack Abshire; her sister, Jean Ann Halverson; both husbands, William H. Miller and Elmer Delaney; and her son; Robert Miller.
Betty was born Sept. 26, 1920, in Kalamazoo, Mich., the daughter of Leslie and Goldie (Howard) Abshire. She was married to William H. Miller from 1942 to 1962, with five children: Linda Folkedahl and Steve, Robert, David and Leslie Bates. Betty was married to Elmer Delaney from 1965 to 2000, gaining four children from his first marriage: Tom, Ron, Gail and Deb.
Betty was a mother of five, stepmother of four, grandmother of 18, great-grandmother of 31 and a great-great-grandmother to one.
Her work included factory, Christian book store, City Hall as a secretary and Van Buren Elementary Library.
She believed in the Lord. Betty cared about people and their relationship with the Lord. She wanted everyone to accept the Lord and Betty practiced what she believed. She was a woman of great spirit who recently joined Stonebridge Church in Cedar Rapids. Betty was still rocking babies to sleep when she was in her 90s.
