Betty D. Bishop, 90, of Coralville, died June 6, 2017, at Lantern Park Care Center.
She was born Oct. 10, 1926, in Oakland, Calif., to Clarence and Alice (Armour) Dettmann. Betty was raised in Perry, Iowa. She attended Simpson College in Indianola, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1948. She was a member of Alpha Chi Omega sorority. While at Simpson, she met Stanley Bishop and they were married on July 21, 1951, in Des Moines. They celebrated the 70th anniversary of their first date on April 12 of this year.
Betty worked at Bankers Life in Des Moines until her children were born, at which time she dedicated her time to her family. Betty loved to travel the United States, having visited all 50 states and many national parks.
She also enjoyed gardening, camping and antiquing. She volunteered for many organizations that her children belonged to, including Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts and the Methodist Church youth group.
She is survived by her husband; son, Rick (Marie) Bishop of Raymond; daughter, Mary Bishop of Woodstock, Ill.; grandson, Brian (Molly) Bishop of Worthington, Minn.; and great-grandson, Wesley Bishop.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Bud Dettmann; and daughter-in-law, Pam Bishop.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, June 9, at Coralville United Methodist Church, with visitation starting at 11 a.m.
