Betty Jean Bayne, 85, of Marion, died Tuesday, March 8, 2016, at Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha.
The daughter of Charles William and Bessie E. Blanchard Bates, she was born March 26, 1930, in Burlington. Betty married James Arthur Bayne on Dec. 23, 1956, in Wapello. He preceded her in death on Oct. 4, 2005.
Betty grew up in Wapello and graduated from Wapello High School in 1948. She graduated from the University of Iowa in 1952 with a B.A. degree and in 1960 with a M.A. degree, both in elementary education. She taught for two years in Iowa City and a year in Solon before teaching in Cedar Rapids community schools for 32 1/2 years.
She was a member of St. Paul's Methodist Church in Cedar Rapids, National T.T.T. Society since 1968, charter member of C.J. T.T.T. in Cedar Rapids, member of Chapter K.J. P.E.O. in Villages, Fla., and memberships in Alpha Xi Delta for 60-plus years, National Education Association and Iowa State Education Association both for 50-plus years.
Betty enjoyed teaching, playing golf, Iowa Hawkeyes, Cubs, her grandchildren, family and Florida winters.
Her family includes a son, James and Cathy Bayne of Fairfax; three grandchildren, Jacob Charles Bayne, Adelaide Elizabeth Bayne and William Robert Bayne; a niece, Karen and Ed Chabal of Washington; and a nephew, Brian Bates of Iowa City.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, James; a son, Robert William Bayne; and a brother and sister-in-law, Charles Robert and Martha Bates.
The funeral ceremony for Betty Bayne will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 11, at Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home in Wapello, with Pastor Dan Doolin officiating. Burial will follow at Wapello Cemetery. The family will meet friends from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. before the funeral on Friday and also at a luncheon gathering following the committal at the fellowship hall of the United Methodist Church in Wapello.
A memorial fund has been established for the benefit of Hospice of Mercy and Wapello Cemetery Road Fund.
