Bettie Conrad, 95, of Mount Vernon, died Monday, April 9, 2018, at Hallmark Care Center. Memorial service: 10 a.m. Thursday, April 12, at Community Bible Church, Mount Vernon, by Pastor Todd Roughton. Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 11, at Stewart Baxter Funeral & Memorial Services, Mount Vernon. Burial: Rose Hill Cemetery, Mechanicsville.
Survivors include her children, Reece (Donna Raschke) Conrad, Constance Conrad, Katha (Steve) Conrad-Barker, Cynthia (Larry) Ament, Keith Conrad and Mary (Randy) Engstrom; nine grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; siblings, Bill Coulter and Earlene "Butch" Devlin; and many in-laws and extended family members.
Elizabeth Ann Coulter was born Dec. 14, 1922, in Audubon, Iowa, to Earl and Wanda (Wright) Coulter. She graduated from Independence High School. She joined the Navy (after her mother's request to wait until after Christmas). She served in World War II, in what she could only call "communications," though secretly contributed to the work of the Enigma machine. Bettie was thoroughly proud of her military service, and thankful for the award the NSA later presented to her. After the war, she was set up on a blind date with Keith Conrad. She already knew him, but since learning they both could dance, she went, and they were married on Nov. 28, 1946. He passed away in January 1988.
Bettie enjoyed golfing, watercolor painting, many card games, and reading, especially her Bible. She belonged to many church groups over the years. She was a member of the Lisbon American Legion Post No. 109.
Bettie most recently enjoyed the kind staff and residents at Hallmark Care Center, and the family is thankful for the generous care given to her.
Elizabeth was preceded in death by her parents; husband; grandson, Robert; and six siblings.
In lieu of flowers, memorials will be donated to charities Bettie would appreciate.
