Bette Mayhew, 93, formerly of Vinton, passed on Friday, Nov. 28, 2014, at St. Luke's Hospice in Cedar Rapids.
She was born to Harold and Lillian Beresford on Dec. 12, 1920, in Staunton, Va. On March 1, 1947, she was united in marriage to Wayne Mayhew. He preceded her in death in 1996.
She spent her childhood in both Iowa and Virginia and graduated from Lincoln High School in Vinton in 1939. Bette and Wayne successfully managed their business, Mayhew Electric, for 48 years.
Bette was a longtime member of the Vinton Presbyterian Church, where she taught Sunday school and was on the Memorial/Bequest committee for 20 years.
She had been a Brownie troop leader, was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 57 and Daughters of the American Revolution Mayflower Chapter, and worked at Fellers, where she enjoyed her many customers. In her spare time she enjoyed collecting antique dishes, reading, hiking and birding. She adored her grandchildren, Sarah and Shane.
She is survived by her daughter, Mary Jane (Dr. B. Keith) Crew of Cedar Falls; her grandchildren, Sarah (Alex) Bridges of Cedar Falls and Shane (Alison) Rundall of Wilmette, Ill.; three great-grandchildren, Lily Hope, Harper and Owen of Wilmette, Ill.; two dear nieces, Brooke Byam and Dr. Paige Soliday of Cincinnati, Ohio; and other nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her sister, Jayne Byam.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 5, at Phillips Funeral Home Chapel, 212 E. Sixth St., in Vinton. A funeral service, officiated by the Rev. Jessica Crane-Munoz and the Rev. Wendi Gillan, will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 6, at the Vinton Presbyterian Church. Interment will be held at Evergreen Cemetery in Vinton.
Memorial contributions may be given in her honor to the Vinton Presbyterian Church or St. Timothy's United Methodist Church in Cedar Falls, where Bette has been attending church for the past four years.
