Bette Jeanne Conrad was born June 19, 1931, in Dubuque, Iowa, the daughter of Fred LeRoy and Helen Margaret (Schultz) Lapham. She graduated from Ottumwa Heights Academy. On Oct. 4, 1951 Bette was united in marriage to Harold Stephen Joseph Conrad at St. Mary's Church in Ottumwa. She worked as a lab tech in the hygenic lab at the University of Iowa, retiring in 1993 after 23 years. Bette was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in North English, the Altar & Rosary Society and the Diocese Council of Catholic Women. She enjoyed spending time with her family and watching her grandchildren's activities. Bette died on Saturday, Sept. 4, 2021, at her home in North English at the age of 90 years.
She is survived by her children, Stephen (Joan) Conrad of Davenport, Mary (Tim) Dunne of Elmhurst, Ill., Margaret (Steve) Manning of Williamsburg, Jim (Deb) Conrad of South English, John (Amy) Conrad of Kinross, Rick (Bev) Conrad of Harper and Karen (Steve) Waite of Grimes; 24 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren. She was preceded by her parents, husband; and a great-grandson, Conrad Nielsen.
Funeral Mass will be held 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 9, 2021, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in North English. Burial will be in the St. Patrick's Little Creek Cemetery near Kinross. Visitation will be Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Powell Funeral Home in North English. There will be a prayer service at 4 p.m. and a rosary at 7 p.m. Memorials may be given to St. Joseph Catholic Church in North English or St. Jude Children's Hospital.
