Bertling, Jeffrey John
Jeffrey John Bertling, 51, of Cascade, died peacefully on Dec. 20, 2012, after a courageous but brief battle with cancer. In accordance with Jeff's wishes his body will be cremated. Family will greet relatives and friends from 2 to 4 p.m., with a prayer service held at 4 p.m. tSunday at Leonard Funeral Home, 2595 Rockdale Rd., Dubuque.
Jeff was born Nov. 3, 1961, to John W. “Bill” and Evelyn (Miller) Bertling. He attended Western Dubuque Schools in Cascade and was a self-employed carpenter, building many fine homes in the Cascade and Dubuque area. But, he was more than just a carpenter, he had a creative mind with a knack for problem-solving and could repair anything. He was generous with these talents and his family and numerous friends were the recipients. For all the help he gave, he would accept nothing in return. His work reflected an overall attention to detail and quest for perfection.
He always had a sparkle in his eye and his infectious laugh was ever present. Jeff had a fun-loving nature and enjoyed life. He loved to road cruise in the convertible, good music and food, gardening, mushroom hunting, horseshoes, and many other activities. While he certainly loved to share in the good times, he was also a trusted and sympathetic confidant to many in bad times.
Jeff had a special place in his heart for children. He is remembered as a relentless teaser and imaginative storyteller, with treats always close at hand.
Jeff was truly a gentle soul and dearly loved by all who knew him. He is survived by his siblings, Jane (Walt) Puccio, Sandy (Mike) Coohey, Susan (Mark) Hostert, Sherry (Tom) Simon, Peggy (Grant) Taylor, Billie Sue (Dave) Hummel, Vicki (Bill) Takes, Jim (Deb) Bertling, Mike (Sharon) Bertling, Kris (Mark) Bideaux and Kari (Dave) Stecher. He was also a beloved uncle to 24 nieces and nephews. His family extended beyond blood, as he was a surrogate brother and uncle to many and leaves behind countless friends. Finally, Jeff is survived by his beloved dogs, lzzy and Ike.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother-in-law, Don Hillebrand.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.
Per Jeff's request, following the prayer service, a celebration of life, filled with all the things he loved most, will be held at the Corner Tap in Cascade.
The family would like to thank all the professional health care providers who cared forJeff the past three months, especially Lisa Melloy and the staff of Jackson CountyHospice. Your kindness will never be forgotten.
He will be greatly missed by all, but we know that “The road goes on forever and the party never ends ...”
