Bertling, Harold N.
Harold N. Bertling, 88, of Cascade, died Saturday, Sept. 25, 2010 at 6:50 a.m., at Shady Rest Care Center, Cascade, of natural causes. Friends and relatives of Harold may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Reiff Funeral Home, Cascade, where a wake service will be held at 7 p.m. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Martin's Catholic Church, Cascade, with the Rev. Jim Miller
officiating. Concelebrating will be the Rev. Douglas Loecke. Burial will be held in Calvary Cemetery, Cascade.
Harold was born Sept. 27, 1921, in Cascade, Iowa, son of William and Cora (Johnson) Bertling. He graduated from eighth grade at the former St. Mary's School in Cascade. On Jan. 8, 1947, he was united in marriage to Evelyn C. Hansen at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Walker. The couple farmed in the rural Cascade area for 50 years. Harold enjoyed repairing his own farm equipment and restoring vintage tractors. In his retirement he enjoyed assembling World War II model airplanes.
Harold was a World War II Navy Veteran, having served from Nov. 1942 to Dec. 1945, as an aircraft mechanic in the Pacific Theater. He was a member of St. Matthias Parish in Cascade, the Cascade American Legion Post No. 528 and the Dubuque County Pork Producers.
He is survived by six children, Phyllis Dolphin of Arizona, Linda (Jay) Hingtgen of Iowa City, Harold Bertling Jr. of Washington State, Gregory (Carol) Bertling of Onslow, Marilyn (Jim) Ewing of Cascade, and Cliff (Nida) Bertling of Cascade; 19 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; one sister, Rosie Kean of Roselle, Ill.; a brother, Milton (Doloris) Bertling of Monticello; a sister-in-law, Judy Bertling
of Cedar Rapids; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Evelyn C. Bertling on Jan. 1, 1988; one son, Douglas Bertling in Nov. 1974; a grandson, Kipp Bertling in August 1978; a sister, Helen Miller; and six brothers, Ed, Ralph, Clarence, John “Bill,” Herbert and Robert Bertling.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the World War II honor flight.
The family would like to thank the staff of Shady Rest Care Center, the staff of River Bend Assisted Living Community, Cascade Family Health Center and Hospice of Dubuque for all their care and kindness.
