Berniece M. Quint, 92, of Cedar Rapids, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2017, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha after a long illness. Services: 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Jude Catholic Church, by the Rev. Mark Reasoner. Burial: Mount Calvary Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family on Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Teahen Funeral Home and after 9 a.m. Tuesday at the church.
Berniece is survived by her daughter, Martha Quint (Kerry Lawrence) of Cedar Rapids; grandson, Brian (Laura) Lawrence; great-granddaughter, Allison; brother, Raymond Reth; sister-in-law, Joanne Quint; and several nieces and nephews.
Berniece was preceded in death by her husband, Leo Quint; parents, Charles and Martha Reth; stepmother, Clara Reth; brother, Harlan Reth; and sister, Ruth Wright.
Berniece was born Aug. 15, 1925, the daughter of Charles F. and Martha Meiners Reth, in Delhi. She graduated from Delhi High School in 1942 and then from Dubuque Business School. She worked in a war plant until her sweetheart, Leo, returned from the service. Berniece married Leo on Nov. 20, 1945. She attended Dubuque Beauty Academy and owned her own shop in Delhi. After moving to Cedar Rapids in 1970, she taught at Young's Beauty Academy and later worked for the Iowa Department of Human Services in Cedar Rapids until her retirement. She then worked at Hancock Fabrics until her second retirement at age 85.
Berniece was a member of St. Jude's for over 40 years and sang in the church choir and with Sweet Adelines. She belonged to the Cedar Valley Chapter of the Embroiderers' Guild of America. Berniece loved singing, quilting and embroidery, and was an accomplished needleworker who earned blue ribbons at the State Fair.
Berniece will be missed by her family and friends. She will be greatly missed by her daughter, Martha, who also was her best friend and caregiver in later years.
Instead of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family and will be used to support Berniece's favorite organizations.
