Bernice Schafer-Gilmer, 92, died Thursday, April 22, 2021, at the Monticello Nursing and Rehabilitation Center following a brief illness.

Surviving are her daughter, Diane (Tom) Yeoman, Monticello; a grandson (her pride and joy), John (Valerie Phillips) Yeoman, Bedford, Mass.; her siblings, Ed Brady and Helen Brady, Anamosa, Donna Schultz, Marion, and Michael (Dixie) Brady, Springville; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, John and Bob; infant son, Donald John; and siblings, Frank, Donald, Marcus, Patrice, Rita, Margaret, Lorraine and Robert.
Bernice Agnes Brady was born Feb. 14, 1929, in Boulder Township, Linn County, Iowa. She was the daughter of Bernard and Stella McCrea, Brady. Bernice graduated from the Anamosa Community Schools. She worked at the Nook Restaurant and later for Northwestern Bell in Anamosa. Bernice married John Schafer in 1949 in Anamosa. The couple farmed near Langworthy. He would precede her in death in 1964. Bernice worked at Collins Radio in Anamosa and later in Cedar Rapids. She was employed by Collins for 30-plus years before she retired. Bernice married Robert Gilmer on Nov. 24, 1985. The couple lived in Cedar Rapids until they built a new home and moved to Monticello in 1994. Bob preceded her in death on Nov. 17, 2004.
Bernice enjoyed spending time working in her yard. She will be dearly missed by those who loved her.
