Bernice Juanita Reynolds was born Sept. 3, 1919, in Iowa City, Iowa, the daughter of Joseph and Coral (Titus) Reynolds. She attended Oxford schools, graduating with the class of 1937. On Sept. 4, 1938, she married John A. "Jack" Kahler in Council Bluffs. She had worked in various jobs over the years – at Bill Zuber's Restaurant in Homestead, Amana Refrigeration for many years, and in the dietary department on the Oakdale campus of the University of Iowa.
But near and dear to her heart was her family! She loved being wife, mom, grandma, great-grandma and great-great-grandma to so many.
Her family loved her cooking, canning, baking and traveling with them. While working at the university, she developed a "liking" for the men's basketball team, often serving their meals to them while they attended here.
In her years living in Oxford she fondly remembered playing on the girl's basketball team in high school. She was proud to have been the church organist of the former Zion Lutheran Church in Oxford, and upon its closing, she became a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Iowa City.
Her family includes her three children, John "Jack" Kahler Jr. (Joan) of Tiffin, Naomi Nearad (Richard) of Swisher and Arlene Gerard (John) of North Liberty; son-in-law Joe Prymek of Oxford; 19 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren.
Bernice was preceded in death by her parents; husband, "Jack;" two daughters, Janet Prymek and Sylvia Adams; son-in-law, Paul Adams; grandson, Jim "Smoe" Prymek; and a sister, Lorraine Koch and her husband, the Rev. Paul Koch.
Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service is caring for Bernice's family and her services.
