Bernice Gardner, 91,
of Cedar Rapids, died Saturday, June 13, 2015, at St. Luke's Hospital. A private family graveside service will be held at Lafayette Cemetery near Alburnett, Iowa.
Bernice was born June 8, 1924, in Alburnett, Iowa, to John and Anna (Lala) Karch. She attended school in Alburnett where she participated in basketball and softball. She continued playing organized league sports in Cedar Rapids into her adulthood. On March 12, 1945, Bernice was united in marriage to DeLos Harrison Gardner. To this union, four children were born.
She worked for most of her life as a child-care provider out of her home. She served families for over 50 years and enjoyed providing love and nurturing care for the neighborhood children and infants. Bernice enjoyed playing cards with her family, especially rummy and solitaire. She will be remembered for her love of children and will be deeply missed.
Bernice is survived by four children, Betty (Wayne) Knapp and Ronald (Barbara) Gardner of Cedar Rapids, Marilyn (Leon) Koenighain of Marion and Gary Gardner of Cedar Rapids; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and sisters, Evelyn Smith and Doralee Pachta.
