Bernice Anna (Federspiel) Babinat, 90, of Waterloo, formerly of Fairbank, died Sunday, Feb. 26, 2017, at Affinity House from complications of dementia.
Bernice was born Sept. 5, 1926, in Gilbertville, daughter of Louis and Magdalen (Funfsinn) Federspiel. She married Melvin A. Babinat on Sept. 28, 1948. He died in August 2009. Bernice was a full-time homemaker, volunteered for over 15 years at the Fairbank Food Pantry, and was a lifetime member of Fortsch-Duffy American Legion Post 552 of Fairbank.
Survivors are five sons: Michael (Debra) of Cedar Falls, Ronald (Lori) of Waterloo, James (Sally) of Big Bend, Wis., Eugene (Tammy) of Silsbee, Texas, and Kenneth (Tracy) of Rocklin, Calif.; five daughters: Barbara (Dale) Wille of Waterloo, Judy (David) Kolbeck of Waterloo, Yvonne (Edward) Smith of Marion, Jane (Fred) Weber of Jesup and Helen (Alan) Heitz of Aurora; 18 grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; 11 great- grandchildren; three stepgreat-grandchildren; and one sister, Jeanette Kinoff of Jasper, Texas.
She was preceded by her husband; parents; two sisters, Sister M. Irene Federspiel SSND and JoAnn Wierck; a brother, Loren Federspiel; and one granddaughter, Jennifer Babinat.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 4, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Fairbank, with Father Paul McManus officiating and Father Kenneth Stecher co-officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. Friday at Woods Funeral Home in Fairbank and also an hour before services at the funeral home. There will be a 3 p.m. rosary at Woods Funeral Home and a Scripture service at 7 p.m.
