BERNICE APPLEBY
Vinton
Bernice Appleby, 100, died Wednesday, Dec. 16, 2015, at Vinton Lutheran Home following an extended illness. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 19, at the Presbyterian Church in Vinton, with the Rev. Jessica Crane-Munoz officiating. Interment will be in the Urbana Cemetery. Friends may call from 9 a.m. until service time Saturday at the church.
A memorial fund has been established for the Vinton Presbyterian Church and Vinton
Lutheran Home.
Bernice was born Nov. 13, 1915, in rural Vinton to Jess and Mae (Garwood) Johnson. On July 26, 1940, she was united in marriage to Harold "Happy" Appleby at Prairie Creek Church north of Vinton. He preceded her in death July 18, 2004.
The couple farmed in the Lynnville, Urbana and Vinton areas before moving to Vinton in 1978. Bernice worked as a cook for HACAP for almost 10 years before her retirement.
She was a member of the Vinton Presbyterian Church and was well-known for her pie-making skills.
She is survived by her children, Kathleen
(Larry) Kemp of
Indianapolis and Kirk (Carilyn) Appleby of Vinton; six grandchildren, Kevin (Amy) Kemp, Dusty (Jody) Kemp, Clayton (Melinda) Kemp, Jay (Kecia) Appleby, Jayma Appleby and Jeanne Appleby; and six great-grand-children, Jayson, Rexton and Lucas Kemp and Kaylie, Kelcie and Kendalyn Appleby.
In addition to her
parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Ross and
Loren Johnson.
