Bernice Ann Brooks, 101, of the Meth-Wick Community, Cedar Rapids, IA, died Friday, March 29, 2024. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, April 9, 2024, from 10:30 am to 11:00 am with a funeral service to follow at 11:00 am at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home, Chapel of Memories, in Cedar Rapids, IA, with Pastor Carol Sundberg officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Park Memorial Cemetery.
Bernice was born January 15, 1923, in Cedar Rapids, IA to Frank and Anna (Kroupa) Hollan. She graduated from Roosevelt High School and Cedar Rapids Business College. Bernice and Bob were married on January 12, 1947. She was employed for many years as a bookkeeper at Hawkeye Lumber Company and Pierson’s Flower Shop. Bernice was a long-time member of St. James United Methodist Church. She taught Sunday School, was very active in United Methodist Women and a charter member of the Sociables. For many years Bernice was a leader of Karen’s Blue Bird and Camp Fire Girls groups. Her favorite hobbies were crocheting, knitting and reading.
Bob and Bernice were members of the Iowanders Camp Club, always looking forward to outdoor adventures in their camper or recreational vehicle. Some of their fondest memories were of winters spent in sunny Arizona with Lois and Dave, exploring, playing cards and enjoying retirement.
Survivors include her daughter, Karen (Gary) Schroeder of Brooklyn, IA; brother, Charles (Pat) Hollan of Cedar Rapids, IA, and many special nieces, nephews and friends. Bernice was preceded in death by her parents, sister, Lois Samek and husband, Robert in 2008.
Bernice will be remembered as a loving, caring wife, mother and Christian. She devoted her life to her family, church and community. Bernice was a resident of the Meth-Wick Community for over 16 years and cherished many friendships she made there.
The family would like to thank the nurses and staff at Meth-Wick for the care and support given to Bernice.
