Funeral services for Bernal Shontz, 91, of Tipton, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 20, at Fry Funeral Home in Tipton with burial at the Tipton Masonic Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, June 19, at the funeral home. Mr. Shontz died June 10, 2016, at Mercy Iowa City.
The son of Harley and Mildred (Davis) Shontz, he was born March 12, 1925, in Riverside. He was a graduate of Tipton High School. He married the late Eloise Heick on May 12, 1946, at Bennett. Mr. Shontz proudly served his country in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1943 to 1946. Mr. Shontz was a self-employed carpenter. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening and his grandchildren.
Mr. Shontz is survived by three daughters, Connie (Billy) Cain, Carla (Arlo) Merritt and Sally Shontz, all of Tipton; two sons, Gary (Margaret) Shontz of Cedar Falls and Ward (Judy) Shontz of Moscow; 12 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; a sister, Joyce Dircks and husband John; and sisters-in-law, Vivian Shontz and Edna Hartwig.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; a sister, Betty Rawhouser and husband Harold; and a brother, Francis (Jim) Shontz.
A memorial fund has been established in Bernal's memory.
